“BEFORE
THE STORM - APACHE”
1906
This scene is in the high mountains of Apache-land in Arizona, just
before the breaking of a rainstorm. The individuals are probably from
the White Mountain Apache tribe that occupied parts of Southeastern
Arizona. At the time it was believed that there were approximately
2000 tribal members living in this area. The dramatic lighting, back
lit subjects, and narrow depth of field were all aspects of Curtis’
pictorial aesthetic. This is a classic, early Curtis image whose drama
is greatly enhanced by the goldtone process.
